Fifty years of Earth Science Education

The Department of Geology and Mining, University of Rajshahi — the pioneer of geoscience teaching in the region.

History

Established 1975

Since its establishment in 1975, the department has been a pioneer in Earth sciences education, producing generations of skilled geoscientists who have played pivotal roles in geological mapping, mineral exploration, groundwater management, and disaster mitigation.

Over the past five decades, the department has:

1. Advanced Geoscience Education – Offering B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs, the department has nurtured scholars and professionals who contribute to national and international geological research.

2. Explored Bangladesh’s Natural Resources – With a focus on the northern mining province, faculty and students have conducted critical research on coal, limestone, iron formations, and hydrocarbon resources and mining activities.

3. Addressed Environmental and Geological Challenges – Research on floods, landslides, earthquakes, and groundwater sustainability has helped shape policies and mitigation strategies.

4. Expanded Research Collaborations – Faculty members, have led international projects in Landslides and slope failures, flood management, geochemistry, and geoheritage preservation, publishing in renowned journals and contributing to global geological discourse.

5. Fostered Student Engagement – Through frequent field visits, seminars, and the Geoscience and Environment Club, the department has encouraged hands-on learning and scientific curiosity.

On this momentous occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Department of Geology and Mining at the University of Rajshahi, we celebrate a legacy of academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and invaluable contributions to Bangladesh’s geosciences and mineral resource development.

As we commemorate this golden jubilee, we honor the dedication of past and present faculty, the achievements of alumni, and the promise of future geoscientists. The department remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and national development, ensuring its leadership in Earth sciences for decades to come.
